Abstract
This chapter introduces the methods used to evaluate information retrieval (IR) systems and is placed early in the book to emphasize the central importance of evaluation. It does not discuss many results of evaluation per se but rather defines a perspective of evaluation that will be present in how various approaches and systems in IR are viewed in ensuing chapters.
