Abstract
As a way to illustrate details of SSA we present an example from climatology that has appeared in the literature and that has generated considerable debate. The record consists of annual values of globally-averaged surface air temperature anomalies extending back to the middle 19th century. The data were constructed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from the surface air temperature records of Jones et al. (1986), Hansen and Lebedeff (1987 and 1988), and from the sea-surface temperature analyses of Farmer et al. (1989), and Bottomley et al. (1990).
