Physical Fitness in Polish Children and Adolescents

  • R. Przeweda

In the system of physical and health education in Poland we often evaluate the level of physical fitness of children and youth (Przeweda, Trzesnowski, 1983; Charzewski, Przeweda, 1992) We treat physical fitness as a positive gauge of health — in accordance with the definition of the World Health Organisation which says that health is not lack of disease, but the general condition of the body and the degree of man’s adjustment to the biological and social conditions of his life. For more than 60 years population studies of physical fitness have been conducted in Poland, embracing large numbers of young people chosen at random from the whole population. A carefully chosen random sample guarantees that the material gathered this way is a reliable representation of all young people (Przeweda, 1992, 1993).
