Abstract

In this chapter, the focus of attention will shift to therapeutic interventions designed to enable clients to learn and to implement constructive self-critical behaviors. Topics discussed will include (1) the use of therapeutic images and concepts as means for conveying important ideas about the form that such alternative behaviors might take; and (2) the employment of various behavioral directives and other procedures to help individuals to engage actively in such behaviors. The general understanding here, as throughout this book, is that no single approach will be possible or most effective with all clients. Thus, the attempt is to provide the therapist with options that may be used with different clients who prove amenable to different interventions.
