Oncogenes and Tumor-Suppressor Genes in Gynecological Malignancies

Abstract

Recent scientific and technical advances hold promise of providing new insight into understanding the molecular pathogenesis of malignant neoplasia. The tools of molecular biology as well as its basic knowledge are now being introduced into the fields of clinical medicine and diagnostic pathology. A growing awareness is developing that newly discovered oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes may provide important new avenues for stratifying patients into different risk groups. This, in turn, can contribute to the development of new methods for detecting cancer and for identifying genetic susceptibility and/or predisposition to cancer, as well as for improving predictions of clinical outcome and providing avenues for new therapies. Gynecological malignancies are no exception.
