Abstract
The JPEG and MPEG standards make it easier now to encode and exchange images and video streams across different computing platforms and networks. Video in particular has the potential to become just another data type. Realtime video processing on PCs and workstations is now handled with special video boards and custom circuits. This is similar to the way most of the advanced graphics processing was performed in the 1980s. Special hardware may yield the highest performance but at a considerable cost to the end user.
