Abstract
In this chapter, we consider the assumptions that underlie the permutation test and take a look at some of the permutation test’s formal properties—its significance level, power, and robustness. This first look is relatively non-mathematical in nature. A formal derivation is provided in Chapter 14.
“Actually, the statistician does not carry out this very tedious process but his conclusions have no justification beyond the fact they could have been arrived at by this very elementary method.”
R.A. Fisher, 1936, on permutation tests.
