Mock Strategic Plan

This chapter tries to synthesize the book’s material by simulating the information systems strategic plan for a fictitious hospital. Tri-City Children’s Hospital (TCH) is a 350-bed children’s hospital located in a major urban area. It is part of a large medical center and is affiliated with a medical school. For most of its existence, TCH was actually part of an adult critical-care hospital. Several years ago, it was decided that TCH should be set up as an independent entity, with its own separate employees, departments, buildings, and systems. For the past six years TCH has had an implicit strategy of separation and stabilization. It had to construct new buildings, recruit staff, acquire equipment and technology, and set up business policies and procedures. Now, all that has been completed, and TCH has started to develop a 5-year plan. The 1990s will be a time of great change for the United States in general and for hospitals in particular.
