Abstract

This chapter, in combination with Chapters 7 and 8, presents an overview of some extensively studied bacteriophages. The intent of the three chapters is to illustrate the basic nature of genetic processes using relatively simple genetic systems as examples. In Chapter 2, the distinction is made between phages that are always virulent and those that can temper their lytic response to form lysogens. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the intemperate (i.e., virulent) phages, and Chapter 8 discusses problems associated with lysogeny.
