Abstract

Even to the casual observer, Venus is a distinctive planet. After the Sun and the Moon, it is the brightest object in the sky and has been called both the “evening star” because of its prominence after sunset, and the “morning star” because of its appearance during the dawn hours. However, even in ancient times, Venus was set apart from stars because of its “wandering,” or planet-like, motion. Unlike most planetary objects, Venus rotates on its axis in a retrograde manner; that is, it spins in the direction opposite to its orbit around the Sun. The rate of rotation is so slow, however, that one day on Venus is equal to more than 116 Earth days.
