Evolutionary Patterns in Specialist and Generalist Species of Anastrepha

The majority of the reported breeding sites of Anastrepha larvae are fleshy fruits. Some 270 plant species from 41 families have been reported as their hosts (Norrbon and Kim, 1988). The great diversity of these larval breeding sites are due to a few generalist species (fraterculus, distincta, obliqua, serpentina, stiiata and suspensa) that breed in 75% of the recorded hosts. Due to their frugivorous habits these species are pests of commercially important fruits.
