Abstract

The biochemical monitoring of the fetus has been started about thirty years ago, when Saling introduced the technique of fetal blood analysis into clinical routine (1,2,4,7,13,14,15). An improvement of the fetal surveillance as well as a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the fetus were achieved by intermittent analysis of pH, pCO2, pO2 and lactate concentration (11,15,21,22). Today non-invasive techniques for continuous tracing became available and were evaluated in in-virto studies. The near infrared laser spectroscopy provides information about biochemical parameters by the analysis of rescattered laser-light (3,9,13,18,19,20).
