Abstract

This is the last of the three introductory chapters. We begin by describing the second main application of sphere packings, the design of signals for data transmission or storage systems. The remaining sections are devoted to topics that, although not our primary concern in this book, are always in our minds: error-correcting codes, Steiner systems, t-designs and finite groups.
