Historically, persons diagnosed as schizophrenic have had little to say about their treatment choices, especially if they were poor and quite disturbed in their ability to function. Relatively affluent and self-possessed persons have generally been given more and better treatment choices. Typically, schizophrenic persons in this century were placed in hospitals remote from population centers, the effect being a kind of segregation from “normal society” that, while protecting others from being disturbed, was usually harmful to the patients themselves. Even “modern” hospitals have not generally provided the treatments of choice.
