Experience in Israel with the Direx Tripter X-1
The Direx Tripter X-1 is a second-generation extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter that uses air underwater spark discharge as its energy source to achieve lithotripsy. Experience with 541 patients (712 treatments) revealed a fragmentation rate of 99%. Stone location was variable and 26% had either stones larger than 2 cm or multiple stones (including staghorn stones).
Follow-up at three months revealed a stone-free rate of 75%; small fragments (≤ 4 mm) were found in 17% of patients, and 8% of patients had larger fragments (> 4 mm). The retreatment rate was 24%, and 7% required auxiliary procedures following lithotripsy. This system was found to be efficient and not difficult to operate with a short learning curve.
