Abstract
HBV belongs to the group of hepadnaviridae, each member of which has a narrow host-specificity. HBV is infectious for humans and chimpanzees. Duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) is not infectious for humans. However, transfection of human hepatoma cells with DHBV DNA results in replication of DHBV in these cells (Pugh et al., 1988). Thus, the narrow host range of hepadnaviruses must be determined by the specificity of virus-host cell interactions during early steps of infection. These steps are likely to correspond to virus adsorption, penetration, and uncoating, processes in which viral envelope proteins are involved. In order to fully understand the molecular basis of the virus life cycle and to design on a rational basis preventive and curative measures against hepatitis B, it is necessary to understand structure-function relationships in HBV env proteins.
