Abstract

  1. 1.

The total fat intake should be < 30% of daily calories.

  2. 2.

The saturated fat intake should be < 10% of daily calories.

  3. 3.

The total polyunsaturated fat intake should represent 6–7% of total calories (with 10% being a maximum).

  4. 4.

The polyunsaturated fat should be a mixture of n−6 plus n−3 polyunsaturates.

  5. 5.
Research has suggested that the minimal nutritional requirements for the polyunsaturated fatty acids be as follows:
    1. (i)

      Linoleic acid (18:2n−6) = 3.0% of calories

    2. (ii)

      Linolenic acid (18:3n−3) = 0.25 to 0.54% of calories

    3. (iii)

Eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n−3) plus docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n−3) = 0.15% of calories.
