Comparison of the Subacute Nephrotoxicity of Industrial Solvents in the Rat
The question whether chronic exposure of low or moderate intensity to nonsubstituted organic solvents can lead to some types of renal diseases is still open. Most of the experimental work carried out so far to address this problem (1–7) report effects occurring only in male rats, which presumably are irrelevant for the human situation. None of these studies have compared the nephrotoxicity of the solvents commonly used in industry using quantitative indicators of renal damage to help identify the potentially most nephrotoxic solvents. To fill this gap, we have compared the effects on the urinary excretion of albumin, ß2-microglobulin (ß2–m) and ß-N-acetylglucosaminidase of the most widely used industrial solvents when subacutely administered to female Sprague-Dawley rats.
