Abstract

In this chapter we describe two special classes of linear codes. One reason for our interest in them is the fact that they both have been used in space exploration projects. The first class we consider was used to transmit photographs from the Mariner 9 spacecraft in January of 1972. The second class was used to transmit colour photographs of Jupiter in March and July of 1979, and of Saturn in November 1980 and August 1981 from the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft.
