You probably already have a good intuitive notion of volume, which measures the amount of space enclosed by a 3-dimensional figure. Just as we did for 2-dimensional figures to compute area, we define a unit volume to be the volume of a cube whose edges are one unit long. Therefore a cube with edges 1 cm long has volume 1 cubic centimeter, which we abbreviate 1 cm3. In this section we show how to compute the volumes of various figures.
