Biological Basis for Management of Groundfish Resources of the West Coast of Canada

This paper is a review of the procedures used for the development and implementation of biological stock assessments for groundfish on the west coast of Canada. The legal basis for the management of the fishery is outlined. The organizational groups involved in the generation of advice to managers are described, along with the review process, and the process for the incorporation of the yield-option recommendations into the annual Pacific Groundfish Management Plan. The influence of biological advice in the management of the fishery is discussed. The sources and types of data that are used in stock assessments are briefly described, along with the use of the data in mathematical models. Some of the limitations of the assessments are reviewed as weIl as possible improvements for the future.
