In this last chapter we introduce what is perhaps the most recent intertwining of the strands of point process theory. Here it is a combination of ideas from statistical mechanics on the one hand with those of Palm theory and conditional intensities on the other. By exterior conditioning we mean conditioning of the point process on its behaviour outside a bounded set. In this sense the theory forms a kind of dual to the Palm theory, which is concerned with conditioning on the behaviour within a bounded set.
