Health Care of the Patient: Human Development and Aging

The family physician is a doctor for the entire life cycle, who commonly sees people from every age and stage of life, from prenatal to postdeath. If the family physician is to do more than treat a wide variety of illnesses, he or she must understand and be responsive to—indeed, must actually treat—the life cycle itself. Development and growth through different stages are as appropriate foci of the family physician as are the illnesses and concerns of each stage. The physician’s own growth and development through the stages of practice are no less dramatic. Attention to both aspects is necessary for the proper management of each problem and patient.
