Abstract
A routine examination of a patient by the family physician should include a thorough examination of the oral cavity. There are many diseases that originate in and are peculiar to the oral cavity, and there are many systemic diseases that have early visible manifestations in this area. The early detection and identification of these diseases can be accomplished by the family physician or the dentist. Many people infrequently or never go to a dentist, thus numerous instances of undetected oral pathology await the family physician.
