Alterations in Erythropoeitin Serum Levels by Shock Waves
Erythropoeitin (EPO) levels were examined before, during, and after ESWL with the Dornier HM3 lithotripter in 30 patients. EPO levels increased by greater than 10 u/l in 16 (53%) patients. The change in EPO levels following ESWL may be adirect effect of shock wave-induced damage to cells or may be secondary to alterations in renal micro-circulation.
