In Situ Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for Lower Ureteric Stones
Twenty-eight patients with lower ureteric calculi unlikely to pass (either spontaneously or without endoscopic disintegration) have been treated by in situ ESWL on the Dornier HM3 lithotripter using a modified technique. The fracturization rate was 86%, and the overall minimum stone-free rate was 64%. Thirteen patients were stone free at the time of discharge from the hospital. Treatment failure was observed in only four patients and two of those had dense lower ureteric steinstrasse as a result of previous ESWL. We conclude that in situ ESWL is an effective and safe method for treating selected lower ureteric stones.
