Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Venous Thrombosis Following Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy

  • Chapter
Shock Wave Lithotripsy

Abstract

Among 500 patients undergoing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) with the Dornier HM3 lithotripter at the Midwest Stone Institute, a postoperative pulmonary embolus (PE) occurred in three. Serial impedance plethysmography and Doppler flow studies were performed in 16 patients at high risk for thromhosis to determine whether the position of the patient in the gantry might cause deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and subsequent PE. None of these patients developed any evidence of DVT following ESWL.
