Embryology of the Vitreous. Congenital and Developmental Abnormalities

  • Chapter
The Vitreous and Vitreoretinal Interface

Abstract

The vitreous has been described as an extracellular matrix derived primarily from retina and ciliary body (1). The anatomic changes in the vitreous with growth and development have been studied extensively at the light microscopic level by early investigators (2–6). Although recent and newer information at the ultrastructural and molecular levels have shed light on specific aspects of vitreous development, the embryology of the vitreous and its role in development of the lens and retinal vasculature remain topics of controversy.
