Training of Non-Psychiatrists — the use of Manuals

  • Chapter
Psychiatry The State of the Art

Abstract

In the developing countries of Africa and Asia, the planning of health services to meet the basic health needs of a vast population poses many problems. Over 75% of the people live in rural areas, far from the cities, with inadequate means of communication. It is for this reason that most health professionals in developing countries have recognised the need for an infrastructure of health services and personnel through a system of primary health care centres situated in all parts of the country. Such services would ensure that most individuals have access to a health centre or sub-centre.
