Abstract
The mainland New Guinea and surrounding islands have over 1, 000 highly discrete languages located within them and the component State of Papua New Guinea with a population of barely 3 million has 760 of these (1). As culture stems from language, each one gives rise to and characterises a distinct cultural-linguistic group of people. Such separateness is attributed to the mountainous terrain and many waves of migration throughout history.
