Abstract

In each person’s life, certain events occur randomly. The sexes of one’s future children are chance events. Probabilistic occurrences affect the size of one’s family. The sizes of future generations from a specific couple are random variables. We will investigate the problem of finding the probability of extinction of a male line of descent. After a brief introduction to the needed mathematical concepts, we will study problems of the following type: If a newly married couple decided to have children until they have one of each sex, what is an estimate of the size of their completed family?
