Weil in his thesis [We 2] gave a decomposition theorem which showed how the decomposition of the divisor of a rational function into irreducible components is reflected in the ideal decomposition of the values of this function at points in number fields. He extended his decomposition theorem to the case of arbitrary absolute values, including archimedean ones, in [We 1].
