Abstract

Fertilization of an ovum by sperm normally occurs in the distal part of the fallopian tube. Cell division and cleavage continue during the transit through the tube. Transit time takes approximately 4 days, a period considered essential in the development of the fertilized ovum in preparation for implantation in the uterus.18 Hertig and co-workers have described human ova as early as a two-cell specimen removed from the fallopian tube at about 24 to 36 hours after fertilization. A later specimen of human blastocyst composed of 58 cells and aged about 4 days has been recovered from the uterine cavity.10
