Diagnosing acute abdomen may be compared to solving a jigsaw puzzle; the pieces of the puzzle must fit together properly for the problem to be solved. History, physical examination, and laboratory findings, as well as the information gained from imaging techniques such as X rays, sonography, radioisotope scans, and computer tomography, often are the pieces joined in solving the puzzle of acute abdomen. Of these, history and physical examination provide by far the most informative clues in solving the problem, despite the advances that have occurred in imaging technique and laboratory investigation.
