Abstract

Before beginning the discussion of the topic under consideration, I would like to point out that the study results that will be presented are the result of a close collaboration between the Institute of Neurology of the University of Bologna, headed by prof. E. Lugaresi, and the Institute of Respiratory Patho-Physiology, under my direction, begun ten years ago. In the studies of the “Pickwick syndrome” and of “primary alveolar hypoventilation” have partecipated, on one hand, Lugaresi, Cocca-gna, Pazzaglia, Ceroni and Mantovani, and, on the other, my.collaborators Petrella and Brignani. I would like to thank all of those who contributed to make available the scientific data that will be used in my speech.
