Abstract

Many lecturers during the present course will be dealing with the effects of ionizing radiations of various types and energies and each of them will provide the details of technique and the findings relevant to any specific quality of radiation. As an introduction to these lectures dealing with protons, neutrons, pions and heavy ions, I have been asked to lead the way with a rather more general outline of the radiobiology of high-LET radiations in relation to the complexity of the biological organization. I will give you therefore a prospective view of the problems applying to this type of studies and I should warn you right from the start that in my lecture you will not find the latest details but generalities, because I will deliberately insist on the formulation of problems rather than pointing to their possible solutions in the different instances.
