Abstract
In mid-March 1975, a survey was conducted in the lower Maumee River, Maumee Bay and the adjacent portions of western Lake Erie to determine the quality of water issuing from the river, particularly suspended sediment, and the plankton populations in the receiving body of water. The study was conducted during spring run-off in an attempt to quantify the effect of the river discharge on such populations. The sediment-ladened effluent from the river coupled with wave-resuspended sediments produced highly turbid water for approximately seven miles offshore at the outer terminus of the bay. Phytoplankton populations appeared to have been greatly inhibited in the river and inner bay; they reached the greatest density at the outer terminus of the bay and then decreased lakeward even though the clarity of the water improved. Cold Detroit River flow (1°C) influenced the lakeward area and probably inhibited algal growth.
