Some Experimental Results on VH Light Scattering by Highly Viscous Liquids

Abstract

As was shown by Stoicheff1 and Fabelinskii2, a fine structure appears in the VH spectrum of the light scattered by viscous liquids like quinoline or nitrobenzene. This structure is connected, as in flow birefringence, to a dynamical coupling3 between the orientational motion of molecules (the correlation time of which is τC) and the transverse velocity of the fluid which has a characteristic decay time of
$$\tau _s = \rho /\left( {\eta _s k^2 } \right)$$
where ρ and ηS are the density and the shear viscosity of the fluid, respectively, and k is the wa.ve vector of the fluctuation which is studied.
