Abstract

In our experiments on several light scattering systems we observed that low frequency intensity fluctuations from the laser (TEM 00) did not appear at all in homodyne experiments, whereas in a number of heterodyne experiments the laser noise poisoned our time auto-correlation function of the scattered light. To understand our observations the following calculations were performed on laser noise in connection with the coherence properties in the detection of scattered light. The problem without the coherence properties in the detection was studied earlier by Cummins and Swinney1 for the homodyne case and by Degiorgio2.
