Developmental Constraints on Conditioning

Abstract

Emphasis on developmental research has been associated historically with the controversy between hereditarians who claimed that most behavioral patterns are preprogrammed genetically and environmentalists who maintained that behavior is the product of experience, both embryonic and postnatal. As history tends to repeat itself, the pendulum of scientific opinion has swung ponderously but predictably from one of these two extreme philosophies of behavior to the other. Whenever this recycling pendulum passed through the middle of its arc, the significance of developmental research increased dramatically, and then it declined slowly as either end of the arc was approached.
