The Housing Finance Agenda in Developing Countries

  • Bertrand Renaud

Abstract

The discussion of current issues in housing finance in developing countries can be rendered as complex as any analyst could wish. However, three plain facts underlie the housing finance agenda today:
  1. 1.

Cities are built the way they are financed, and in the residential sector building is often inefficient or poor.

  2. 2.

The current cost of existing housing finance systems is impossible to maintain in the present financial environment.

  3. 3.

The potential contribution that housing can make to financial development has yet to be realized in most countries.
