Plasma Heating by High-Current Relativistic Electron Beams

The relaxation of a beam is due to the scattering of beam electrons on the small-scale oscillations excited by the beam itself; the subsequent dissipation of energy of these oscillations results in plasma heating. The dispersion properties and the growth rates of oscillations are defined by the plasma density, the temperature, the magnetic field intensity, the beam density, and the beam angular spread, etc. Below we will consider the case when the magnetic field is small(ωHe « ωpe) and the most unstable waves are the Langmuir oscillations.
