Fundamentals of the Intermediate Valence Problem

  • Chapter
Moment Formation In Solids

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 117))

Abstract

The intermediate valence problem presents a serious challenge to theorists. So far we understand well only the single intermediate valence impurity in a conduction band and the interactions between a pair of them. For the real problem, only qualitative ideas exist. After discussing the conditions in which intermediate valence comes about, I will discuss the single impurity and the pair interaction problems, draw qualitative conclusions about the lattice, point out the difficulties in the lattice problem and discuss some approximate treatments.
