Present Status of Theory: 1/N Approach

When I began to prepare these lectures, and to wonder what I could possibly say that hadn’t already been said by all the brilliant lecturers you have already had, I began to realize how many years I have actually been associated with the problem of “Moment Formation”. As I have often explained, I don’t actually quite go back all the way to the first exploration of this problem, since the virtual state cpncept was originated in fact by Blandin and Friedel in early 19591 or so, and I heard a discussion of it by Blandin in 1959 at Oxford, which stimulated me to develop the model of which so much is made in the mixed valence field.
