Abstract
The haemocompatibility of a biomaterial can be considered as the best expectable result of its interactions with blood. These interactions are led by at least two sets of parameters: a first one related to morphological physical and chemical characteristics of the surface exposed to blood; a second one, related to blood flow conditions, these latter acting as modulators of the role played by the first set of parameters. Authors describe methodologies, based on the use of radioactive tracers, which allow direct studies of these interactions, and give a few examples which illustrate their interest in both experimental and clinical contexts.
