Abstract

Hydrogen NMR is particularly well suited to the determination of molecular structure because:

  1. 1.

    It shows the distribution of hydrogen according to chemical environment, without the necessity for direct calibration of either chemical shift or intensity for each sample.

     
  2. 2.

    The correlation of chemical shift with molecular structure is good, and the correlation of coupling constant with structure is useful.

     
  3. 3.

    Hydrogen occurs in most organic compounds.

     
  4. 4.

    Hydrogen is the most easily detected stable isotope.
