Microbiology stands as the ultimate challenge for a laboratory system since it incorporates a vast array of names, dates, places, organisms, and cultures. This primary reference material is far in excess of that of any other laboratory data base. It also represents an area in which flexibility is crucial, since many of the specimens require special handling and individualized testing procedures. Initially, we looked at the log of sources available for cultures and came to the conclusion that it was infinite. We were faced with designing a system which incorporated the advantages of nursing station ordering along with the flexibility of free-format English.
