Evaluation methods as instruments for improvement of courses and programs

Abstract

The analysis of the nature of the instructional process clearly brings to light the relationship between evaluation and instruction. Basically, instruction is the process by which desirable changes are made in the behaviour of students. ‘Behaviour’ is used here in a broad sense and includes thinking, feeling and acting. Instruction is not effective unless some change in the behaviour of students has actually taken place. Thus, instruction in a particular science course, may be aiming at developing an understanding of certain important scientific principles, the ability to use these principles in explaining common scientific phenomena, and some skills in analysing scientific problems to determine what kinds of data are needed to solve them. Instruction in such a course of science will not be effective unless changes of the kind mentioned above actually take place in the students.
