Nutrition of Aging People in Finland

Abstract

The number of elderly people is increasing in the more developed countries. In Finland about 9% of people are over 65 years old; this will be 11 per cent by 1980 and 12 per cent by 1990. The proportion of those over 75 will be particularly increased. Because women tend to live longer than men (72 as opposed to 65 years respectively on average) the proportion of elderly women to men will be great. The increasing numbers of elderly people may give rise to numerous problems, many of them economic and social but some also physiological and nutritional.
