Effects of Ti-6A1-4V Alloy Metallurgical Structures on Ultrasonic Response Characteristics

Use of titanium is increasing for large asymmetrical airframe structural forgings that frequently require billets with crosssectional dimensions of 16 inches and. larger. Ultrasonic transmission losses and noise levels in titanium are significantly higher than in aluminum and steel alloys previously used in airframe applications. Therefore, sensitivity for flaw detection decreases dramatically as billet sizes and finished part section-thicknesses increase. To meet the demand for improved inspectability, much effort has been directed toward the development of more sensitive instrumentation and inspection techniques. Concurrent with these developments, Alcoa has investigated the effects of macrostructure, microstructure and subtransus deformation on the ultrasonic inspectability of titanium alloy billet and aerospace forgings in an effort to optimize ultrasonic transmission characteristics of the material.
